Mamit
Innuat

Representative:
Guy Bellefleur,
Conseil de bande des Montagnais de Unamen Shipu
In
the Innu language, Mamit Innuat means "the people (or innuat) of
the east." The organization of the same name, which today
represents the interests of 2,500 individuals living in four communities,
was established in 1982. The communities of Mingan, Natashquan,
La Romaine, and Pakua Shipi are the basis for this organization.
They are located along the middle and lower north shore of the St.
Lawrence River.
As a tribal
council, Mamit Innuat provides its member communities with the range
of services that used to be delivered by the Department of Indian
Affairs. These services relate to the sectors of health, social
services and social development, education, economic development,
and technical services (buildings and infrastructures).
In addition,
Mamit Innuat is responsible for ensuring that the territorial and
political interests of the communities are protected and promoted.
That is why the communities, through the Assemblée Mamu Pakatatau
Mamit (AMPM), gave a team the mandate to follow up on matters pertaining
to territorial and governmental negotiations, developments on the
territory, and the environment. The AMPM team also offers
various professional services to support field workers.
The people of
the Mamit Innuat communities have had long-standing relations with
the Innu of Labrador with whom they share a common language and
culture. They also share a common territory (Nitassinan).
In order to
consolidate their relations in terms of international representations,
Mamit Innuat, Innu Nation, and the Innu community of Schefferville
set up the Conseil des Innu de Nitassinan, a non-government organization
(NGO), which in June 1997, after two years of effort, obtained a
seat on the UN's Economic and Social Council.
