Churchill
Falls is a community of some six hundred and fifty (650) people
located on a central Labrador plateau, 300 kilometres west of Happy
Valley-Goose Bay and 264 kilometres east of Labrador City, Labrador.
It is a one-industry community established in 1967 to provide a
home for the workers who constructed and are operating a 5,428,500
kilowatt power facility. The Churchill Falls power plant is the
largest underground hydro plant in the world. It is also ranked
as the sixth largest capacity hydro plant in the world.
There are two
hundred and fifty-eight (258) dwellings in the community. The dwellings
are semi-circled around a large community centre which houses most
of the services and recreational facilities. The majority of the
residents have come from various parts of Newfoundland and Labrador,
with a small percentage from other parts of Canada. Residents are
almost entirely from and English speaking background. The employment
rate is quite high and most residents work with the hydro utility.
Prior to 1996,
Churchill Falls was outside of the fly zone for military low level
flying. However, with the move to a new fly zone, Churchill Falls
fell within the zone and became a no fly zone below 5,000 feet.
