Nunatsiavut Government

Representative: James Goudie, Environmental Advisor

The Nunatsiavut Government was incorporated in 1975 and represents the 5,000 Inuit of Labrador. The Nunatsiavut Government is a constituent affiliate of Inuit Tapirisat of Canada and participates through the Canadian Inuit delegation of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference, an international Inuit non-governmental organization.  The Government is democratically organized with an elected Board of Directors representing all Labrador Inuit communities. The President and Vice-President are also elected by the Inuit.

The Nunatsiavut Government strives to:

  • Promote Inuit aspirations and involvement through the democratic system with regard to all matters affecting Inuit of Labrador;
  • Promote and preserve Inuit culture and language and develop dignity and pride in Inuit heritage among Inuit of Labrador.
  • Promote respect for Inuit culture and language by the citizens of Newfoundland and Canada;
  • Promote and protect Inuit traditional hunting, fishing and our aboriginal constitutional rights
