The
Nunatsiavut Government was incorporated in 1975 and represents the
5,000 Inuit of Labrador. The Nunatsiavut Government is a constituent
affiliate of Inuit Tapirisat of Canada and participates through
the Canadian Inuit delegation of the Inuit Circumpolar Conference,
an international Inuit non-governmental organization. The
Government is democratically organized with an elected Board of
Directors representing all Labrador Inuit communities. The President
and Vice-President are also elected by the Inuit.
The Nunatsiavut
Government strives to:
- Promote
Inuit aspirations and involvement through the democratic system
with regard to all matters affecting Inuit of Labrador;
- Promote
and preserve Inuit culture and language and develop dignity and
pride in Inuit heritage among Inuit of Labrador.
- Promote
respect for Inuit culture and language by the citizens of Newfoundland
and Canada;
- Promote
and protect Inuit traditional hunting, fishing and our aboriginal
constitutional rights
