Innu Nation

Representative: Richard Nuna

The Innu Nation, formerly the Naskapi Montagnais Innu Association, was established in the mid 1970s to defend Innu lands, culture and environment, and to seek ways to affirm Innu rights to Nitassinan, the traditional territory of the Innu people in eastern Québec and Labrador. While the Innu Nation represents the people of Davis Inlet and Sheshatshui, the Innu people of Labrador have many close relatives on the Québec side of the border. Up until the time of settlement in government-built villages in the 1950s and 1960s, the Innu people travelled freely throughout much of the Québec-Labrador peninsula following traditional travel routes. The Innu Nation is currently negotiating a land rights agreement with the Canadian and Newfoundland governments on behalf of the Innu people. The Innu Nation also represents the Innu people with respect to Impact Benefit Agreement negotiations, cultural and environmental protection regimes, and other matters.
