voice over their economic future.
Brief
Description of Board
The Regional
Economic Development Boards in Newfoundland and Labrador were established
to develop a new perspective on economic development. The province
is divided into twenty development zones. These development boards
are mandated the task of developing a strategic economic plan for
their zone.
| The Board's
Mandate is to: |
1. Take
a leadership role in the development and implementation
of zonal strategic economic plan;
2. Coordinate business development support;
3. Support organizations and communities within the region;
4. Coordinate social and economic initiatives relating to
economic development;
5. Promote public participation and community education;
and
6. Plan an active lobbying role to attract and recruit private
investments into the Zone 3 area.
|
The Plan is
designed to serve a number of needs. The Board is fully cognizant
that it cannot be the only agent of change. The process of
economic development involves a partnership of all the parties with
an interest in the region. The Board will not be an agency
that distributes funding nor will it be a guarantor of investment
decisions. The Board will, however, be an advocate for regional
interests and a forum for those interests to be heard and developed.
The Board will assist in the development of a positive regional
investment environment and of the human resources necessary to take
advantage of the opportunities identified.
While the Zone
incorporates approximately 70 000 sq km, only 10,000 individuals
resided within it. The Zone represents 17.3 percent of the provincial
land area but only 1.8 percent of the population of the province.
